The Big Thing

There’s a big thing

A thing we can all connect to

a thing that’s true and real and beautiful and powerful and enduring

of course it’s not a thing, but calling it the big thing is convenient

and appealing in a way due to the lack of elegance

the big thing is elegant, but it’s not about elegance

it’s about something bigger than elegance

sometimes we know when we’re connecting to the big thing in the moment

and sometimes only later

sometimes not at all

sometimes the big thing announces itself

sometimes it doesn’t

sometimes it accepts invitations

sometimes it declines

some people call the big thing love

or god

or purpose

or nature

or truth

or something like that

some people access it by being quiet

others by being loud

some by making art

others by making peace

there aren’t a lot of rules when it comes to the big thing

but I’m pretty sure you can’t access it through hatred

or violence

or cruelty

there are many paths that lead to and from the big thing

and each of us can walk those paths, but even more, each of us can be a path

to the big thing
