Our parents read these words
Our grandparents read these words
And the generations that came before
Names, faces, places, hearts, minds, souls, whose names we do not know
but who somehow dreamed that we might one day read these words too
We are not the first, we are not the last,
We are not the greatest, we are not the least
We are but fellow readers, fellow meaning seekers,
Fellow strugglers, fellow skeptics, fellow dreamers
Did they find meaning? Can we find meaning?
Did they find comfort? Can we find comfort?
Did they find inspiration? Can we?
Did they have faith? Do we?
We read these words
Our children will read these words
And our children’s children, God willing, will read these words
Whether our reading has any value, any merit, any worth,
only we can determine.
