Every so often our complicated Middle School academic schedule allows for a moment of Jewish creative inspiration. That was the case recently when we were able to offer a “breakout” Tefilah during our regular Tefilah time. Advertised as a “singing Tefilah” the “cost” of admission was that anyone who came, came ready to sing.
60 of us crowded together into our small makeshift Middle School Chapel and transformed that simple space into a room full of song. We sang favorite Jewish songs and prayers with full hearts and full voices. It was joyful, spirited, heartwarming, and so much more.
We fulfilled the beautiful spiritual teaching from Jewish tradition: when you sing you pray twice. We may not have followed the traditional prayer service, but there’s no doubt that a spirit of prayerfulness filled the space.
What a joy to sing with a group tweens and teens, songs that most of us know by heart, with no agenda other than to create a beautiful sound together!
